So here we are, the end of May and it is still freezing (not really freezing but certainly not balmy) cold outside. I get so excited about spring, the plants and trees start to bud, the birds start singing a little louder and the bunnies have eaten my tulip buds, again. That really gets under my skin but what are you gonna do. The wildlife is abundant where I live, rabbits, skunks, squirrels, racoons and so many birds. In the morning when the sun is coming up, I sit outside with my tea and watch the world come alive. The most soothing sounds of song birds can relax me like nothing else.

Living in the city is not my favourite, I prefer open fields, the smell of the forest or the lapping of the water against a sandy shoreline. My backyard is my sanctuary, and it reflects some of those aspects. There is a way to attain this in your backyard too. I am fortunate to live in an old neighbour hood that has mature trees, the river is near by, so walks with the dog on the trail, or a float down the river are options.

How to make your backyard, your sanctuary.

  1. Put in a pond or a water feature. The sound of water flowing creates a zen atmosphere, that for me helps to melt some of my stress away. Unfortunately, it doesn’t fix any real problems but gives a bit of peace to help get through it. It doesn’t have to be big, a small fountain from Amazon can be an affordable option that can be used inside or out.

  2. Plant something, even if you only have a balcony or become part of the community garden. Indoor plants can be great too, I have a bunch! Getting your hands in the dirt and watching something grow does something to the soul. Not to mention helps you feel more grounded (no pun intended).

  3. Create a quiet place. Somewhere you can put your feet up and unwind from your day. It is so important to stop and recharge in a world that you created for you! A small bench or lounge chair, with cushions and a couple of cozy blankets. Always a side table, where else am I going to put my tea! Unplug and just be, no phone, just you and a good book or just take some time to breathe. This can be inside or out, you decide, its for you.

Life can be a crazy roller coaster with so much responsibility, you deserve to stop and smell the roses as it were. I did intend to write about my seedlings today but this is where my mind took me. Sometimes, our thoughts need to be put down on paper or laptop. Getting things out is a super easy way to feel heard, it doesn’t have to be for anyone but yourself.

Creating the best life for you is the goal. Always look for the Shiny Silver Lining in everything that comes your way. Enjoy your day and remember be kind!
